Home-Schoolers Compete on Global Level
The Imaginary Friends and STARRT teams of home-schooled students from Lighthouse Instruction for Enrichment who live in DeSoto, Marshall or Tate Counties teamed up against students from across the U.S. and more than 30 countries, including teams from Turkey, Brazil, Poland, China, Mexico, Canada and Guatemala. These students earned the right to take part in the competition of a lifetime at the Destination ImagiNation (DI) Global Finals.

At Vet School, The Doctor Is In - And So Is The Teen
Mary Brown of Waxhaw isn't old enough for a driver's license, but she's spending her summer doing graduate-level research at N.C. State University's veterinary school.
While other teens are texting, swimming and socializing, she's using a microscope to gauge whether nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (think Advil) slow healing in horse intestinal cells that have been deprived of oxygen.

Homeschooler Packs Education into 18 Years

10-Year-Old Does Her Part to Help Prevent Breast Cancer
After her Aunt Marlene was diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2009, Olivia Bates knew she wanted to do something to help.
“We’re really close in our family, and I just wanted to do something to help so that we could try to prevent breast cancer from spreading,” she said.
